My mom began suffering from vertigo one week before being discharged from the hospital on January 25. While tests have discovered no cause for it, the sensation is no less real and has had a negative impact on her Guillain-Barré recovery efforts.When one cannot look down at one's feet to insure that they are where they are supposed to be, and firmly planted on the ground, transfers between bed and wheelchair, for example, become more difficult, and most attempts to stand up or walk remain nothing more than that: attempts. While this would be true for someone of any age, someone my mother's age is justifiably concerned about falling and breaking a hip in the process. That said, the physical therapist that began coming out to the house last week is doing a good job of working with my mom while alleviating some of those concerns.
The consensus of opinion appears to be that this long episode of vertigo is due to stress and will dissipate with time. I sure hope so.

My mom has had episodes of vertigo due to stress -- when dealing with her late sister's illness (Parkinson's with dementia) and stubborn refusal to accept live-in help (which led to her death in a fire), for instance.
The vertigo did go away.
