That is such a realistic picture of war. I always wondered why people played a musical instrument in the middle of a battle. Once someone explained they had drummer boys to keep cadence and a guy holding the flag was important so everybody could keep focused, but here we have three musicians marching right past a dead guy with dark smoke all around.

The critics then said Willard's work was "not art." I believe that that is the generally accepted view among professional critics today, as well.
FWIW, I thought that guy in the lower right was dying but not dead as it seemed he was raising his cap in his hand at the dight of the flag.
